Interview With Megan Kenealy

Meet our next brilliant Women in PPC expert, Megan Kenealy đź’Ž

Share the story of how you first got into PPC?

I got into PPC when I started my role at Avenue! My previous experience was all SEO, so I was a little nervous to dive into the paid side but I have learned so much since starting and it has really rounded out my overall SEM knowledge.

What was the proudest moment of your PPC career? Share your story!

This moment happened recently! We had an e-commerce client who came to us with an account that had a pretty low historical ROAS, so one of our biggest goals has been to do what we can to improve that numbe and really make their PPC investment worthwhile. As of last month, we have doubled their starting ROAS, and based on performance we expect this number to keep growing!

Do you struggle with maintaining a healthy work-life balance? Share an anecdote!

I definitely struggle with this. It can be very easy for my to kind of guilt myself into staying online too late and just finishing “one more thing” if I feel like I wasn’t productive enough, but I’m working on changing that mindset! It helps that my workplace really values a healthy work life balance and will push me to take time off and log off early when I need it.

Have you ever experienced any problems or challenges as a PPC because you’re a woman? Share an anecdote.

I think the biggest struggle here stems from just having a really big case of impostor syndrome. I’ve noticed that when I’ve worked with men in the past they are able to have a level of sureness and confidence that myself and my co-workers who are women have trouble replicating, even though we had the same, if not more, experience. It all comes back to confidence and self-assuredness.

Have you ever had any advantages or benefits as a PPC because you’re a woman? Share an anecdote.

One of my favorite parts of being a woman in the SEM world is the other amazing women I get to connect with and meet. In addition to being part of Women in PPC, I’m also part of the Women in Tech SEO community, which has been such a valuable resource for problem solving, brainstorming, networking, and just overall inspiration.

Are there any differences in how you’re treated as a female by clients? Share an anecdote.

Lucky for me, we work with really great clients, many of whom are values-driven organizations, so I haven’t experienced any notably different treatment than a man might—but I know this is definitely not the case for everyone, and I consider myself lucky.

Has a client ever underestimated you because you’re a woman? Share an anecdote!

Same answer as above! I’m lucky to have not had this experience that I know many other women in this field have had.

If you could wave a magic wand and change something in the PPC world, what would it be?

Make campaign learning phases faster!

What about being a PPC do you enjoy the most?

I love being able to see results so quickly, especially coming from an SEO-focused background where results can sometimes take up to 6 months to really start trickling in.
